About the Program
The UCMAS Abacus & Math Learning Program is designed as an engaging 3-day introductory experience to strengthen core mathematical abilities through mental training techniques. The program introduces students to the abacus as a visual and tactile tool to build strong numerical foundations.
Each session focuses on basic finger movement exercises and abacus practice to develop speed, accuracy, and hand-eye coordination. Over the three days, students are introduced to number recognition, basic arithmetic operations, and simple mental calculation techniques. Timed activities, concentration drills, and guided problem-solving exercises are incorporated to enhance focus and logical thinking.
| Learning Outcome: 1) Introduction to Abacus Learning Students are introduced to the abacus as a physical and mental calculation tool, learning to represent and manipulate numbers systematically. 2) Building Speed and Accuracy in Arithmetic Speed and accuracy in basic arithmetic operations are developed through intensive, structured mental calculation practice across sessions. 3) Enhancing Concentration and Memory Concentration and working memory are trained as students perform rapid mental calculations under structured time and accuracy constraints. 4) Developing Visual-Spatial Thinking Visual-spatial thinking is strengthened as students internalise the abacus framework and begin to calculate without the physical tool. 5)Fostering Confidence in Mathematics Students develop a confident, positive approach to mathematics through the demystification of complex calculations via the abacus method. |
